The Story of Tanah Mae
The name Tanah Mae was carefully chosen to reflect my love for clay and my Moluccan heritage. Tanah Liat is the Indonesian word for clay, while Mae is a nod to my name, Mayke — pronounced Meyke. Together, the name captures the essence of what I do: work that’s rooted in a deep love for the art of ceramics and a strong connection to my Moluccan culture. My adat.
I grew up surrounded by food, family, and shared moments around the table. Funerals, weddings, birthdays, Christmas, everything was about gathering, cooking, and connecting. I think my love for tableware started there, in those long dinners filled with laughter, stories, and care. Those memories continue to inspire the pieces I make today.
I began working with clay almost five years ago, while I was still working in fashion. The fast-paced world of deadlines, travel, and constant movement left me searching for stillness. Ceramics became that quiet space. A way to slow down, to be present, and to reconnect with something real and grounded. Now, as a mom to a beautiful daughter, that sense of balance and presence feels more meaningful than ever.
Each piece I create is shaped by hand at Het Amsterdams Kleibedrijf, a lovely shared studio in Amsterdam where I’m surrounded by a community of makers who inspire and support one another.
Every object I make carries a bit of that rhythm: calm, intentional, and meant to be part of everyday rituals The simple moments that bring people together.
Terima kasih for following and supporting my journey. Your interest means the world to a small independent webshop rooted in heritage, community, and the joy of coming together. I look forward to seeing my pieces become a part of your story.
Much Love, Mayke
